Successive versions of LLVM should retain the ability to parse bitcode
generated by old releases of the compiler. This adds a bitcode format
compatibility test, which is intended to provide good (albeit not
entirely exhaustive) coverage of the current LangRef.
This also includes compatibility tests for LLVM 3.6. After every 3.X.0
release, the compatibility.ll file from the 3.X branch should be copied
to compatibility-3.X.ll on trunk, and the 3.X.0 release used to generate
a corresponding bitcode file.

Remove the fake `DW_TAG_auto_variable` and `DW_TAG_arg_variable` tags,
using `DW_TAG_variable` in their place Stop exposing the `tag:` field at
all in the assembly format for `DILocalVariable`.
Most of the testcase updates were generated by the following sed script:
find test/ -name "*.ll" -o -name "*.mir" |
xargs grep -l 'DILocalVariable' |
xargs sed -i '' \
-e 's/tag: DW_TAG_arg_variable, //' \
-e 's/tag: DW_TAG_auto_variable, //'
There were only a handful of tests in `test/Assembly` that I needed to
update by hand.
(Note: a follow-up could change `DILocalVariable::DILocalVariable()` to
set the tag to `DW_TAG_formal_parameter` instead of `DW_TAG_variable`
(as appropriate), instead of having that logic magically in the backend
in `DbgVariable`. I've added a FIXME to that effect.)

Replace the general `createLocalVariable()` with two more specific
functions: `createParameterVariable()` and `createAutoVariable()`, and
rewrite the documentation.
Besides cleaning up the API, this avoids exposing the fake DWARF tags
`DW_TAG_arg_variable` and `DW_TAG_auto_variable` to frontends, and is
preparation for removing them completely.

Add a verifier check that `DILocalVariable`s of tag
`DW_TAG_arg_variable` always have a non-zero 'arg:' field, and those of
tag `DW_TAG_auto_variable` always have a zero 'arg:' field. These are
the only configurations that are properly understood by the backend.
(Also, fix the bad examples in LangRef and test/Assembler, and fix the
bug in Kaleidoscope Ch8.)
A large number of testcases seem to have bitrotted their way forward
from some ancient version of the debug info hierarchy that didn't have
`arg:` parameters. If you have out-of-tree testcases that start failing
in the verifier and you don't care enough to get the `arg:` right, you
may have some luck just calling:
sed -e 's/, arg: 0/, arg: 1/'
or some such, but I hand-updated the ones in tree.

Remove unnecessary and confusing common base class for `DICompositeType`
and `DISubroutineType`.
While at a high-level `DISubroutineType` is a sort of composite of other
types, it has no shared code paths, and its fields are completely
disjoint. This relationship was left over from the old debug info
hierarchy.
git-svn-id: https://llvm.org/svn/llvm-project/llvm/trunk@243160 91177308-0d34-0410-b5e6-96231b3b80d8
Handle `DISubroutineType` up-front rather than as part of a branch for
`DICompositeTypeBase`. The only shared code path was looking through
the base type, but `DISubroutineType` can never have a base type.
This also removes the last use of `DICompositeTypeBase`, since we can
strengthen the cast to `DICompositeType`.

`DISubroutineType` is impossible at this `dyn_cast` site, since we're

Remove unnecessary references to `DW_TAG_subroutine_type` in

Refactor `isUnsignedDIType()` to deal with `DICompositeType` explicitly.
Since `DW_TAG_subroutine_type` isn't handled here (the assertions about
tags rule it out), this allows strengthening the `dyn_cast` to
`DIDerivedType`.
Besides making the code clearer, this it removes a use of
`DIDerivedTypeBase`.

Disallow all mutation of `MCSubtargetInfo` expect the feature bits.
Besides deleting the assignment operators -- which were dead "code" --
this restricts `InitMCProcessorInfo()` to subclass initialization
sequences, and exposes a new more limited function called
`setDefaultFeatures()` for use by the ARMAsmParser `.cpu` directive.
There's a small functional change here: ARMAsmParser used to adjust
`MCSubtargetInfo::CPUSchedModel` as a side effect of calling
`InitMCProcessorInfo()`, but I've removed that suspicious behaviour.
Since the AsmParser shouldn't be doing any scheduling, there shouldn't
be any observable change...

Force all creators of `MCSubtargetInfo` to immediately initialize it,
merging the default constructor and the initializer into an initializing
constructor. Besides cleaning up the code a little, this makes it clear
that the initializer is never called again later.
Out-of-tree backends need a trivial change: instead of calling:
auto *X = new MCSubtargetInfo();
InitXYZMCSubtargetInfo(X, ...);
return X;
they should call:
return createXYZMCSubtargetInfoImpl(...);
There's no real functionality change here.

There are two main reasons why a linked-list makes sense for
`DIEValueList`.
1. We want `DIE` to be on a `BumpPtrAllocator` to improve teardown
efficiency. Making `DIEValueList` array-based would make that much
more complicated.
2. The singly-linked list is fairly memory efficient. The histogram
[1] shows that most DIEs have relatively few values, so we often pay
less than the 2/3-pointer static overhead of a vector. Furthermore,
we don't know ahead of time exactly how many values a `DIE` needs,
so a vector-like scheme will on average over-allocate by ~50%. As
it happens, that's the same memory overhead as the linked list node.

The comment I added to the code is a little more succinct, but I think
it's enough to give the idea.
git-svn-id: https://llvm.org/svn/llvm-project/llvm/trunk@240868 91177308-0d34-0410-b5e6-96231b3b80d8
Allow callers of `Value::print()` and `Metadata::print()` to pass in a
`ModuleSlotTracker`. This allows them to pay only once for calculating
module-level slots (such as Metadata).
This is related to PR23865, where there was a huge cost for
`MachineFunction::print()`. Although I don't have a *particular* user
in mind for this new code, I have hit big slowdowns before when running
`opt -debug`, and I think this will be useful. Going forward, if
someone hits a big slowdown with `print()` statements, they can create a
`ModuleSlotTracker` and send it through. Similarly, adding support to
`Value::dump()` and `Metadata::dump()` should be trivial.
I added unit tests to be sure the `print()` functions actually behave
the same way with and without the slot tracker.
git-svn-id: https://llvm.org/svn/llvm-project/llvm/trunk@240867 91177308-0d34-0410-b5e6-96231b3b80d8
Another follow-up related to r240848: try a little harder to share slot
tracking calculations within a single `MachineInstr` dump. This is
unrelated to `MachineFunction::print()`, since that should be passing
through the function's `ModuleSlotTracker` by now, but could affect the
speed of dumping from a debugger if there is more than one IR-level
operand.
git-svn-id: https://llvm.org/svn/llvm-project/llvm/trunk@240852 91177308-0d34-0410-b5e6-96231b3b80d8
For another 1% speedup on the testcase in PR23865, push the
`ModuleSlotTracker` through to metadata-related printing in
`MachineBasicBlock::print()`.
git-svn-id: https://llvm.org/svn/llvm-project/llvm/trunk@240848 91177308-0d34-0410-b5e6-96231b3b80d8
Push `ModuleSlotTracker` through `MachineOperand`s, dropping the time
for `llc -print-machineinstrs` on the testcase in PR23865 from ~13
seconds to ~9 seconds. Now `SlotTracker::processFunctionMetadata()`
accounts for only 8% of the runtime, which seems reasonable.
git-svn-id: https://llvm.org/svn/llvm-project/llvm/trunk@240845 91177308-0d34-0410-b5e6-96231b3b80d8
Expose enough of the IR-level `SlotTracker` so that
`MachineFunction::print()` can use a single one for printing
`BasicBlock`s. Next step would be to lift this through a few more APIs
so that we can make other print methods faster.
Fixes PR23865, changing the runtime of `llc -print-machineinstrs` from
many minutes (killed after 3 minutes, but it wasn't very close) to
13 seconds for a 502185 line dump.

Replace the `std::vector<>` for `DIE::Children` with an intrusively
linked list. This is a strict memory improvement: it requires no
auxiliary storage, and reduces `sizeof(DIE)` by one pointer. It also
factors out the DIE-related malloc traffic.
This drops llc memory usage from 735 MB down to 718 MB, or ~2.3%.
(I'm looking at `llc` memory usage on `verify-uselistorder.lto.opt.bc`;
see r236629 for details.)
git-svn-id: https://llvm.org/svn/llvm-project/llvm/trunk@240736 91177308-0d34-0410-b5e6-96231b3b80d8
Change `DIE::Values` to a singly linked list, where each node is
allocated on a `BumpPtrAllocator`. In order to support `push_back()`,
the list is circular, and points at the tail element instead of the
head. I abstracted the core list logic out to `IntrusiveBackList` so
that it can be reused for `DIE::Children`, which also cares about
`push_back()`.
This drops llc memory usage from 799 MB down to 735 MB, about 8%.

Split out code to patch up the `DW_AT_stmt_list` for the cloned DIE, and
reorganize it so that it doesn't depend on `DIE::values_begin()` and
`DIE::values_end()` (which I'm trying to kill off).
David Blaikie and I talked about adding a range-algorithm version of
`std::find_if()`, but the assertion *still* required getting at the end
iterator. IMO, a separate helper function with an early return is
easier to reason about here.

`DIEValue` directly is coming shortly.

There are three types of `DbgVariable`:
- alloca variables, created based on the MMI table,
- register variables, created based on DBG_VALUE instructions, and
- optimized-out variables.
This commit reconfigures `DbgVariable` to make it easier to tell which
kind we have, and make initialization a little clearer.
For MMI/alloca variables, `FrameIndex.size()` must always equal
`Expr.size()`, and there shouldn't be an `MInsn`. For register
variables (with a `MInsn`), `FrameIndex` must be empty, and `Expr`
should have 0 or 1 element depending on whether it has a complex
expression (registers with multiple locations use `DebugLocListIndex`).
Optimized-out variables shouldn't have any of these fields.
Moreover, this separates DBG_VALUE initialization until after the
variable is created, simplifying logic in a future commit that changes
`collectVariableInfo()` to stop creating empty .debug_loc entries/lists.

Stop storing a `DIEAbbrev` in `DIE`, since the data fits neatly inside
the `DIEValue` list. Besides being a cleaner data structure (avoiding
the parallel arrays), this gives us more freedom to rearrange the
`DIEValue` list.

drops it further to 829 MB for a net memory decrease of around 1.9%
(incremental decrease around 5.7%).

This reverts commit r238350, effectively reapplying r238349 after fixing
(all?) the problems, all somehow related to how I was using
`AlignedArrayCharUnion<>` inside `DIEValue`:
- MSVC can only handle `sizeof()` on types, not values. Change the
assert.
- GCC doesn't know the `is_trivially_copyable` type trait. Instead of
asserting it, add destructors.
- Call placement new even when constructing POD (i.e., the pointers).
- Instead of copying the char buffer, copy the casted classes.
I've left in a couple of `static_assert`s that I think both MSVC and GCC
know how to handle. If the bots disagree with me, I'll remove them.
- Check that the constructed type is either standard layout or a
pointer. This protects against a programming error: we really want
the "small" `DIEValue`s to be small and simple, so don't
accidentally change them not to be.
- Similarly, check that the size of the buffer is no bigger than a
`uint64_t` or a pointer. (I thought checking against
`sizeof(uint64_t)` would be good enough, but Chandler suggested that
pointers might sometimes be bigger than that in the context of
sanitizers.)
I've also committed r238359 in the meantime, which introduces a
DIEValue.def to simplify dispatching between the various types (thanks
to a review comment by David Blaikie). Without that, this commit would
be almost unintelligible.
Here's the original commit message:
--
Change `DIEValue` to be stored/passed/etc. by value, instead of
reference. It's now a discriminated union, with a `Val` field storing
the actual type. The classes that used to inherit from `DIEValue` no
longer do. There are two categories of these:
- Small values fit in a single pointer and are stored by value.
- Large values require auxiliary storage, and are stored by reference.
The only non-mechanical change is to tools/dsymutil/DwarfLinker.cpp. It
was relying on `DIEInteger`s being passed around by reference, so I
replaced that assumption with a `PatchLocation` type that stores a safe
reference to where the `DIEInteger` lives instead.
This commit causes a temporary regression in memory usage, since I've
left merging `DIEAbbrevData` into `DIEValue` for a follow-up commit. I
measured an increase from 845 MB to 879 MB, around 3.9%. The follow-up
drops it lower than the starting point, and I've only recently brought
the memory this low anyway, so I'm committing these changes separately
to keep them incremental. (I also considered swapping the commits, but
the other one first would cause a lot more code churn.)

An upcoming commit will switch to storing `DIEValue`s by value in a
`DIE`, so move the `DIE` down below all the subclasses it can. Two
subclasses inherit from `DIE`, so drop those down below `DIE`.
`DIEValue` will become a discriminated union, which contains an instance
of one of the classes that are currently subclasses. "Big" ones, such
as those that inherit from `DIE`, will continue to be stored by pointer.
This commit does as much of the code motion ahead of time as possible.

Stop creating symbols we don't need in `DwarfStringPool`. The consumers
only call `DwarfStringPoolEntryRef::getSymbol()` when DWARF is
relocatable, so this just stops creating the unused symbols when it's
not. This drops memory usage from 851 MB to 845 MB, around 0.7%.
(I'm looking at `llc` memory usage on `verify-uselistorder.lto.opt.bc`;
see r236629 for details.)

Mint a new function, `AsmPrinter::emitDwarfStringOffset()`, which takes
a `DwarfStringPoolEntryRef`. When DWARF is relocatable across sections,
this defers to `emitSectionOffset()` and emits the `MCSymbol`;
otherwise, just emit the offset directly, without using any intermediate
symbols.
`EmitLabelDifference()` is already optimized to emit absolute label
differences cheaply when possible, so there aren't any major memory
savings here (853 MB down to 851 MB, or 0.2%). However, it prepares for
making the `MCSymbol`s in the `DwarfStringPool` optional.

Expose the `DwarfStringPool` entry in a header, and store a pointer to
it directly in `DIEString`. Instead of choosing at creation time how to
emit it, use the `dwarf::Form` to determine that at emission time.
Besides avoiding the other `DIEValue`, this shaves two pointers off of
`DIEString`; the data is now a single pointer. This is a nice cleanup
on its own -- and drops memory usage from 861 MB down to 853 MB, around
0.9% -- but it's also preparation for passing `DIEValue`s by value.

Extract out `DwarfStringPoolEntry` and `DwarfStringPoolRef` from
`DwarfStringPool` so that downstream users can start using
`DwarfStringPool::getEntry()` directly. This will allow users to delay
the decision between emitting a symbol or an offset until later.

Change `DwarfStringPool` to calculate byte offsets on-the-fly, and
update `DwarfUnit::getLocalString()` to use a `DIEInteger` instead of a
`DIEDelta` when Dwarf doesn't use relocations (i.e., Mach-O). This
eliminates another call to `EmitLabelDifference()`, and drops memory
usage from 865 MB down to 861 MB, around 0.5%.

Remove all virtual functions from `DIEValue`, dropping the vtable
pointer from its layout. Instead, create "impl" functions on the
subclasses, and use the `DIEValue::Type` to implement the dynamic
dispatch.
This is necessary -- obviously not sufficient -- for passing `DIEValue`s
around by value. However, this change stands on its own: we make tons
of these. I measured a drop in memory usage from 888 MB down to 860 MB,
or around 3.2%.

Shave a pointer off of `MCSymbolName` by storing `StringMapEntry<bool>*`
instead of `StringRef`. This brings `sizeof(MCSymbol)` down to 64 on
64-bit platforms, a nice round number. My profile showed memory
dropping from 914 MB down to 908 MB, roughly 0.7%. Other than memory
usage, no functionality change here.

Previously `SDDbgValue`s used the general allocator that lives for all
of `SelectionDAG`. Instead, give them their own allocator, and reset it
whenever `SDDbgInfo::clear()` is called, plugging a spiritual leak.
This drops `SelectionDAGBuilder::visitIntrinsicCall()` off of my heap
profile (was at around 2% of `llc` for codegen of `-flto -g`). Thanks
to Pete Cooper for spotting the problem and suggesting the fix.

Cleanup how `SDDbgValue` is initialized, and rearrange the fields to
save two pointers in the struct layout. No real functionality change
though (and I doubt the memory savings would show up in a profile).

Create a low-overhead path for `EmitLabelDifference()` that emits a
emits an absolute number when (1) the output is an object stream and (2)
the two symbols are in the same data fragment.
This drops memory usage on Mach-O from 975 MB down to 919 MB (5.8%).
The only call is when `!doesDwarfUseRelocationsAcrossSections()` --
i.e., on Mach-O -- since otherwise an absolute offset from the start of
the section needs a relocation. (`EmitLabelDifference()` is cheaper on
ELF anyway, since it creates 1 fewer temp symbol, and it gets called far
less often. It's not clear to me if this is even a bottleneck there.)

initialization isn't legal (or at least not supported).

Finally remove the `MCSymbolData::Symbol` pointer. It was still being
used to track whether `MCSymbolData` had been initialized, but this is
better tracked by the bitfield in `MCSymbol`.
The only caller of `MCSymbolData::initialize()` was `MCAssembler`, which
(other than `Symbol`) passed in all-0 values. Replace all that
indirection with a default constructor.
The main point is a cleanup (and there's more cleanup to do), but there
are also some small memory savings. I measured ~989 MB down to ~975 MB,
cutting a little over 1% off the top of `llc`.

Make the back-pointer from `MCSymbolData` to `MCSymbol` private,
preparing to remove the back pointer entirely. I've already updated all
the users, although for now it's still used to indicate whether
`MCSymbol::Data` has been initialized.

Remove the last use of `MCSymbolData::getSymbol()`. There's some
*really* hairy stuff going on in `MachObjectWriter::WriteNList()` that I
want to come back to. In particular, it updates `Symbol` to point at
its aliasee (if any), but leaves `Data` behind, and it's not clear
whether everything makes sense there.
For now I've left the logic unchanged by adding `OrigSymbol` and moving
the FIXME from r237750 up a bit higher. I've filed PR23598 to track
looking into this.

r237490 accidentally dropped MCSymbolData from the MCAssembler dump.
Add it back underneath the MCSymbol dump. Remove the MCSymbol dump from
MCSymbolData, since this would cause an infinite co-recursion, and
besides, that back pointer is going away.
