# 1.4
## Replace 12v aux power with 5v
This change is for two reasons:
1) The 7805 regulator is wasteful, especially when the IIgs only has 2.5a on the 12v rail
2) Some models of Apple IIe don't have a fan connector, and most II/II+'s don't
The fix for this will be to get 5v directly from the Game IO (Paddle) Port, a direct tap on the 5V power supply wire, or from a card slot.
This 5v will be used directly via an IC that performs reverse current and over-current protection.
## Branding Changes
The current design has been retroactively branded "BlueGS / BP" to distinguish it from the upcoming RP2040-based "BlueGS / RP"

# Powering BlueGS
There are 4 ways to power your BlueGS board, listed here from "most easy" to "least easy".
## Termination Power from SCSI card
If your SCSI card provides [Termination Power](#what-is-termination-power), then you only have to BlueGS to your SCSI card using the included flat 26-pin cable or DB-25-M connector. No additional steps are required, and BlueGS should turn on the moment that the computer is powered up.
## Termination Power from another SCSI device
If your SCSI card does not provide Termination Power, then you can provide the necessary power through another SCSI device connected to the DB-25 connector.
Most external SCSI devices will provide the necessary Termination Power. To power BlueGS this way:
* Connect the new SCSI device to the DB-25 connector
* On BlueGS, switch "Termination" to "off"
* Ensure that the new SCSI device is terminated, either via a switch (if it has one, such as on the IOmega Zip Drive) or an external terminator that connects to one of the SCSI ports of the device.
This external device must be powered-on *before* the IIgs turns on.
## +5V from inside the computer
You can power BlueGS via the "Aux 5V Power In" connector, using a 5V source in your computer. This can be from the Game IO port, a card slot, or a tap from the power supply rail.
If you power BlueGS using this connector, it will also send termination power to any other devices on the SCSI bus that may need it -- such as another BlueSCSI device!
Older versions of BlueGS could be powered by the 12V fan connector in the IIgs, but that has been removed in 1.4 and higher.
## USB port on Blue Pill board
You can power BlueGS using the USB connector on the Blue Pill module as long as you are not also using SCSI Termination Power or 5V aux power.
### Why can't I use USB while BlueGS is powered from SCSI or Aux?
There is a design flaw on the Blue Pill board where power sent to the +5V pin of the board can then be sent *back* through the USB connector. This "backflow" can potentially cause damage to whatever is providing USB power and so it strongly recommended that you do not use USB to power BlueGS while connected to SCSI Termination Power or aux power.
If there is no termination power on your bus and BlueGS is not using the aux power connector, then there is no danger of "backflow" and USB power can be used.
# What is Termination Power?
Very briefly, "Termination Power" is electrical current that is used to power devices called "Terminators". A "Terminator" is a device connected to the end of a "bus" (the cable/wire) to show where the end is.
If you think of the SCSI bus as a water pipe and each drive on the bus as a water tap connected to the pipe, then a Terminator is the cap at the end of the pipe.
# What SCSI cards do/don't provide Termination Power?
While many SCSI cards do not provide termination power, there are some that can be modified to that they will.

# How can I tell if my SCSI card is providing Termination Power?
If your card is not in one of the lists above, then the easiest way is to connect BlueGS and see if it turns on when the the computer is powered on.
If you have a multi-meter, you can check the voltage on pin 25 of the DB-25 connector. If termination power is provided, this pin should read between 4.5 and 5 volts.

# BlueGS: Internal BlueSCSI for Apple IIgs and //e
*BlueGS* is the internal hard drive your Apple IIgs and //e always *craved*.
Using the [BlueSCSI](https://github.com/erichelgeson/BlueSCSI) SCSI drive emulator and your compatible SCSI card, you have a fully internal hard drive with accessible microSD slot while still keeping your DB-25 connector free for other peripherals.

# Can I use it on things besides the IIgs and //e?
Yes! It's a standard BlueSCSI device and uses the standard BlueSCSI V1 firmware. In fact, the built-in DB-25 connector makes it the perfect external SCSI drive as well!
BlueGS can be mounted internally in any computer that has an open cutout for a DB-25 connector.
## ✅ Compatible Apple clones
These computers *do* have rear DB-25 cutouts and so BlueGS should be able to mount properly, but are untested.

## 🚫 Apple II/II+ and similar clones
BlueGS will function in an Apple II or II+, but you will not be able to mount it because it uses "V" shaped cutouts instead of D-Subminiature connector cutouts like the //e and IIgs have.
Many Apple II clones use the same rear cutout design and have the same mounting limitation. **A mounting solution for these machine is planned**.

# Introduction
Before continuing, please ensure you have all the required parts ready:
* Assembled BlueGS board, including "Blue Pill" module (See [assembly guide](../assembly/) for more info)
* Rear slot cover
* 2x screws for rear slot cover ("US Machine Screw" size: #4-40, length: > 0.75in/15mm)
* 26-pin ribbon cable
# Open computer case
Turn off the computer power switch and unplug the power connector.
Open the top cover of the computer case.

Before continuing, it is recommended that your remove any static electricity from you body by "grounding" yourself. To do this, touch the metal part of any electrical appliance that uses a grounded/earthed electrical plug (the outside of a metal surge protector, for example).
# Remove rear slot cover
Find an unused DB-25 slot cover. The DB-25 slots are the longest, and a usable slot will be the same length as the slot already used for the external connector of your SCSI card.
To remove the cover, grasp the metal tab on the inside of the slot and turn counter-clockwise for 1/4 of a turn. Remove the metal tab, and the plastic slot cover should fall away.
Keep both the metal tab and the plastic cover for later re-use as these parts are very hard to replace.

# Unscrew DB-25 Connector
Find the existing connector for the SCSI card on the rear of the computer. It may look similar to connector for a serial card, so make sure you find the correct connector. Using a small socket or needle-nose pliers, loosen the two screw mounts on either end of the connector and remove them. The DB-25 connector should now be freed.

# Remove SCSI card
Find your SCSI card (typically in slot #7) and remove it by pulling it firmly upward.
IMPORTANT: While removing the card, ensure the cable for the DB-25 connector (see previous step) is kept away from the metal tabs on the rear of the computer case. These tabs can be **sharp** and can damage the cable.

# Move DB-25 connector
With the SCSI card out of the machine, look at the long rectangular connection where the DB-25 cable connects to the SCSI card (known as an "IDC connector"). Note where "Pin 1" is oriented. Pin 1 is usually marked by a red stripe.
Next, remove the DB-25 connector from the SCSI card. Do this by grasping the IDC connector on the SCSI card and gently pulling away from the board.
Next, take the IDC connector on the DB-25 cable and connect it the BlueGS board. It can connect to *either* connector J1 or J2.
When connecting the cable, make sure that **Pin 1** is correctly aligned. On the cable, Pin 1 is usually marked by a red stripe. On BlueGS, Pin 1 for connectors J1 and J2 are those closest to the top-left corner and the pins are marked with a "1" on the board next to them.
IMPORTANT: Again, *make sure* pin 1 is correctly aligned.

Take the included ribbon cable and attach one end to BlueGS. Use either J1 or J2, whichever connector is not used by the DB-25 connector in the previous step. As before, ensure that Pin 1 is correctly aligned.
Then, connect the other end of the ribbon cable to the SCSI card. Plug it in so that Pin 1 of the ribbon cable is in the same place where Pin 1 of the DB-25 cable was previously.

# Install BlueGS in rear slot
Place BlueGS so the edge with the MicroSD slot, LEDs, and switch is inside one of the open slots on the rear of the computer. It is recommended to orient BlueGS so that the USB port is pointed upwards.
Place the included slot cover on the *outside* of the case over the appropriate slot and thread the included screws through the two screw holes and in to the brackets on BlueGS.
Once the screws are correctly threaded, gently tighten them down with a screwdriver until BlueGS is firmly attached to the slot.

In the remaining open slot, reinstall the DB-25 connector.

Reinstall the SCSI card in the correct slot and replace the cover on the computer.

# Insert MicroSD card, check termination
Take a MicroSD card that has been previously prepared (instruction [here](https://github.com/erichelgeson/BlueSCSI/wiki/Usage)) and insert it in to the slot on the rear.
If you have no other SCSI devices connected to your computer, the "Termination" switch should be set to "On".
# Power on and enjoy!
Reconnect all necessary cables, turn on the power and enjoy.
The "Power" LED should light the moment the computer turns on, and the "ACT" LED should light whenever the emulated SCSI drive is being read or written.
