.SH NAME
.BR stty ,
.BR gtty
\- set and get terminal state (defunct)
.SH SYNOPSIS
#include <sgtty.h>
.sp 1
int
\fBstty\fR (int \fIfd\fR, struct sgttyb *\fIbuf\fR);
.br
int
\fBgtty\fR (int \fIfd\fR, struct sgttyb *\fIbuf\fR);
.SH DESCRIPTION
These interfaces are obsoleted by
.BR ioctl (2)
and should be avoided.
.LP
The
.BR stty
function
sets the state of the terminal associated with
.IR fd .
The
.BR gtty
function
retrieves the state of the terminal associated
with
.IR fd .
To set the state of a terminal the call must have
write permission.
.LP
The
.BR stty
call is actually
.nf
ioctl(fd, TIOCSETP, buf);
.fi
while the
.BR gtty
call is
.nf
ioctl(fd, TIOCGETP, buf);
.fi
See
.BR ioctl (2)
and
.BR tty (4)
for an explanation.
.SH DIAGNOSTICS
If the call is successful 0 is returned, otherwise \-1 is
returned and the global variable
.IR errno
contains the reason for the failure.
.SH SEE ALSO
.BR ioctl (2),
.BR tty (4)
.SH HISTORY
The
.BR stty
and
.BR gtty
functions appeared in 4.2BSD.
