The
.BR uname ()
function stores null-terminated strings of information identifying
the current system into the structure referenced by
.IR name .

.B utsname
structure is defined in the
.B <sys/utsname.h>
header file, and contains the following members:

Name of the operating system implementation.

Network name of this machine.

Release level of the operating system.

Version level of the operating system.

is successful, 0 is returned, otherwise, -1 is returned and

is set appropriately.
.SH CAVEATS
The inclusion of the
.B nodename
member in the
.B utsname
structure does not imply that it is sufficient information
for interfacing to communications networks.
