Chandler Carruth c303463dcc Fix a case where SROA did not correctly detect dead PHI or selects due
to chains or cycles between PHIs and/or selects. Also add a couple of
really nice test cases reduced from Kostya's reports in PR13905 and
PR13906. Both are fixed by this patch.

Chandler Carruth 72bf29f45d Fix a crash in SROA. This was reported independently by Takumi and
David (I think), but I would appreciate folks verifying that this fixes
the big crasher.

I'm still working on a reduced test case, but because this was causing
problems I wanted to get the fix checked in quickly.

Chandler Carruth bc4021f31e Address one of the original FIXMEs for the new SROA pass by implementing
integer promotion analogous to vector promotion. When there is an
integer alloca being accessed both as its integer type and as a narrower
integer type, promote the narrower access to "insert" and "extract" the
smaller integer from the larger one, and make the integer alloca
a candidate for promotion.

In the new formulation, we don't care about target legal integer or use
thresholds to control things. Instead, we only perform this promotion to
an integer type which the frontend has already emitted a load or store
for. This bounds the scope and prevents optimization passes from
coalescing larger and larger entities into a single integer.

Chandler Carruth 02e92a0b5d Switch to a signed representation for the dynamic offsets while walking
across the uses of the alloca. It's entirely possible for negative
numbers to come up here, and in some rare cases simply doing the 2's
complement arithmetic isn't the correct decision. Notably, we can't zext
the index of the GEP. The definition of GEP is that these offsets are
sign extended or truncated to the size of the pointer, and then wrapping
2's complement arithmetic used.

This patch fixes an issue that comes up with *no* input from the
buildbots or bootstrap afaict. The only place where it manifested,
disturbingly, is Clang's own regression test suite. A reduced and
targeted collection of tests are added to cope with this. Note that I've
tried to pin down the potential cases of overflow, but may have missed
some cases. I've tried to add a few cases to test this, but its hard
because LLVM has quite limited support for >64bit constructs.

Chandler Carruth d54a6b56a9 Fix a case where the new SROA pass failed to zap dead operands to
selects with a constant condition. This resulted in the operands
remaining live through the SROA rewriter. Most of the time, this just
caused some dead allocas to persist and get zapped by later passes, but
in one case found by Joerg, it caused a crash when we tried to *promote*
the alloca despite it having this dead use. We already have the
mechanisms in place to handle this, just wire select up to them.

Chandler Carruth 38f35fd3b7 Fix the last crasher I've gotten a reproduction for in SROA. This one
from the dragonegg build bots when we turned on the full version of the
pass. Included a much reduced test case for this pesky bug, despite
bugpoint's uncooperative behavior.

Also, I audited all the similar code I could find and didn't spot any
other cases where this mistake cropped up.

Chandler Carruth 7c8df7aa0c Fix getCommonType in a different way from the way I fixed it when
working on FCA splitting. Instead of refusing to form a common type when
there are uses of a subsection of the alloca as well as a use of the
entire alloca, just skip the subsection uses and continue looking for
a whole-alloca use with a type that we can use.

This produces slightly prettier IR I think, and also fixes the other
failure in the test.

Chandler Carruth c370acdf96 Add a major missing piece to the new SROA pass: aggressive splitting of
FCAs. This is essential in order to promote allocas that are used in
struct returns by frontends like Clang. The FCA load would block the
rest of the pass from firing, resulting is significant regressions with
the bullet benchmark in the nightly test suite.

Thanks to Duncan for repeated discussions about how best to do this, and
to both him and Benjamin for review.

This appears to have blocked many places where the pass tries to fire,
and so I'm expect somewhat different results with this fix added.

As with the last big patch, I'm including a change to enable the SROA by
default *temporarily*. Ben is going to remove this as soon as the LNT
bots pick up the patch. I'm just trying to get a round of LNT numbers
from the stable machines in the lab.

NOTE: Four clang tests are expected to fail in the brief window where
this is enabled. Sorry for the noise!

Chandler Carruth 63392ea3ba Refactor the SROA visitors for partitioning an alloca and building
partition use lists a bit. No functionality changed.

These visitors are actually visiting a tuple of a Use and an offset into
the alloca. However, we use the InstVisitor to handle the dispatch over
the users, and so the Use and Offset are stored in class member
variables and set just before each call to visit(). This is fairly
awkward and makes the functions a bit harder to read, but its the only
real option we have until InstVisitor can be rewritten to use variadic
templates.

However, this pattern shouldn't be followed on the helper member
functions where there is no interface constraint from the visitor. We
already were passing the instruction as a normal parameter rather than
use the Use to get at it, start passing the offset as well. This will
become more important in subsequent patches as the offset will in some
cases change while visiting a single instruction.

Chandler Carruth 1c8db50a9a Port the SSAUpdater-based promotion logic from the old SROA pass to the
new one, and add support for running the new pass in that mode and in
that slot of the pass manager. With this the new pass can completely
replace the old one within the pipeline.

The strategy for enabling or disabling the SSAUpdater logic is to do it
by making the requirement of the domtree analysis optional. By default,
it is required and we get the standard mem2reg approach. This is usually
the desired strategy when run in stand-alone situations. Within the
CGSCC pass manager, we disable requiring of the domtree analysis and
consequentially trigger fallback to the SSAUpdater promotion.

In theory this would allow the pass to re-use a domtree if one happened
to be available even when run in a mode that doesn't require it. In
practice, it lets us have a single pass rather than two which was
simpler for me to wrap my head around.

There is a hidden flag to force the use of the SSAUpdater code path for
the purpose of testing. The primary testing strategy is just to run the
existing tests through that path. One notable difference is that it has
custom code to handle lifetime markers, and one of the tests has been
enhanced to exercise that code.

This has survived a bootstrap and the test suite without serious
correctness issues, however my run of the test suite produced *very*
alarming performance numbers. I don't entirely understand or trust them
though, so more investigation is on-going.

To aid my understanding of the performance impact of the new SROA now
that it runs throughout the optimization pipeline, I'm enabling it by
default in this commit, and will disable it again once the LNT bots have
picked up one iteration with it. I want to get those bots (which are
much more stable) to evaluate the impact of the change before I jump to
any conclusions.

NOTE: Several Clang tests will fail because they run -O3 and check the
result's order of output. They'll go back to passing once I disable it
again.

2012-09-14 09:30:33 +00:00
Chandler Carruth 713aa9431d Introduce a new SROA implementation.
This is essentially a ground up re-think of the SROA pass in LLVM. It
was initially inspired by a few problems with the existing pass:
- It is subject to the bane of my existence in optimizations: arbitrary
  thresholds.
- It is overly conservative about which constructs can be split and
  promoted.
- The vector value replacement aspect is separated from the splitting
logic, missing many opportunities where splitting and vector value
  formation can work together.
- The splitting is entirely based around the underlying type of the
alloca, despite this type often having little to do with the reality
of how that memory is used. This is especially prevelant with unions
and base classes where we tail-pack derived members.
- When splitting fails (often due to the thresholds), the vector value
replacement (again because it is separate) can kick in for
preposterous cases where we simply should have split the value. This
results in forming i1024 and i2048 integer "bit vectors" that
tremendously slow down subsequnet IR optimizations (due to large
APInts) and impede the backend's lowering.

The new design takes an approach that fundamentally is not susceptible
to many of these problems. It is the result of a discusison between
myself and Duncan Sands over IRC about how to premptively avoid these
types of problems and how to do SROA in a more principled way. Since
then, it has evolved and grown, but this remains an important aspect: it
fixes real world problems with the SROA process today.

First, the transform of SROA actually has little to do with replacement.
It has more to do with splitting. The goal is to take an aggregate
alloca and form a composition of scalar allocas which can replace it and
will be most suitable to the eventual replacement by scalar SSA values.
The actual replacement is performed by mem2reg (and in the future
SSAUpdater).

The splitting is divided into four phases. The first phase is an
analysis of the uses of the alloca. This phase recursively walks uses,
building up a dense datastructure representing the ranges of the
alloca's memory actually used and checking for uses which inhibit any
aspects of the transform such as the escape of a pointer.

Once we have a mapping of the ranges of the alloca used by individual
operations, we compute a partitioning of the used ranges. Some uses are
inherently splittable (such as memcpy and memset), while scalar uses are
not splittable. The goal is to build a partitioning that has the minimum
number of splits while placing each unsplittable use in its own
partition. Overlapping unsplittable uses belong to the same partition.
This is the target split of the aggregate alloca, and it maximizes the
number of scalar accesses which become accesses to their own alloca and
candidates for promotion.

Third, we re-walk the uses of the alloca and assign each specific memory
access to all the partitions touched so that we have dense use-lists for
each partition.

Finally, we build a new, smaller alloca for each partition and rewrite
each use of that partition to use the new alloca. During this phase the
pass will also work very hard to transform uses of an alloca into a form
suitable for promotion, including forming vector operations, speculating
loads throguh PHI nodes and selects, etc.

After splitting is complete, each newly refined alloca that is
a candidate for promotion to a scalar SSA value is run through mem2reg.

There are lots of reasonably detailed comments in the source code about
the design and algorithms, and I'm going to be trying to improve them in
subsequent commits to ensure this is well documented, as the new pass is
in many ways more complex than the old one.

Some of this is still a WIP, but the current state is reasonbly stable.
It has passed bootstrap, the nightly test suite, and Duncan has run it
successfully through the ACATS and DragonEgg test suites. That said, it
remains behind a default-off flag until the last few pieces are in
place, and full testing can be done.

Specific areas I'm looking at next:
- Improved comments and some code cleanup from reviews.
- SSAUpdater and enabling this pass inside the CGSCC pass manager.
- Some datastructure tuning and compile-time measurements.
- More aggressive FCA splitting and vector formation.

Many thanks to Duncan Sands for the thorough final review, as well as
Benjamin Kramer for lots of review during the process of writing this
pass, and Daniel Berlin for reviewing the data structures and algorithms
and general theory of the pass. Also, several other people on IRC, over
lunch tables, etc for lots of feedback and advice.

Chandler Carruth be06428ba3 Try to appease MSVC even more elaborately in the alignment hacking space.
MSVC doesn't support passing by-value parameters with alignment of
16-bytes or higher apparantly. What is deeply confusing is that it seems
to *sometimes* (but not always) apply this to any type whose alignment
is set using __declspec(align(...)). This caused lots of errors when we switch
SmallVector over to use the automatically aligned character array
utilities as they used __declspec(align(...)) heavily.

As a pretty horrible but effective work-around, we instead cherry pick
the smallest alignment sizes with specific types that happen to have the
correct alignment, and then fall back to the attribute solution past
them. This should resolve the MSVC build errors folks have been hitting.
Sorry for that. In good news, it will do this without introducing other
UB I hope. =]

Chandler Carruth 961e1acfb2 Fix PR13412, a nasty miscompile due to the interleaved
instsimplify+inline strategy.

The crux of the problem is that instsimplify was reasonably relying on
an invariant that is true within any single function, but is no longer
true mid-inline the way we use it. This invariant is that an argument
pointer != a local (alloca) pointer.

The fix is really light weight though, and allows instsimplify to be
resiliant to these situations: when checking the relation ships to
function arguments, ensure that the argumets come from the same
function. If they come from different functions, then none of these
assumptions hold. All credit to Benjamin Kramer for coming up with this
clever solution to the problem.

Previously, MBP essentially aligned every branch target it could. This
bloats code quite a bit, especially non-looping code which has no real

Chandler Carruth 40dab1059e Bring TinyPtrVector under test. Somehow we never picked up unit tests
for this class. These tests exercise most of the basic properties, but
the API for TinyPtrVector is very strange currently. My plan is to start
fleshing out the API to match that of SmallVector, but I wanted a test
for what is there first.

Sadly, it doesn't look reasonable to just re-use the SmallVector tests,
as this container can only ever store pointers, and much of the
SmallVector testing is to get construction and destruction right.

Just to get this basic test working, I had to add value_type to the
interface.

While here I found a subtle bug in the combination of 'erase', 'begin',
and 'end'. Both 'begin' and 'end' wanted to use a null pointer to
indicate the "end" iterator of an empty vector, regardless of whether
there is actually a vector allocated or the pointer union is null.
Everything else was fine with this except for erase. If you erase the
last element of a vector after it has held more than one element, we
return the end iterator of the underlying SmallVector which need not be
a null pointer. Instead, simply use the pointer, and poniter + size()
begin/end definitions in the tiny case, and delegate to the inner vector
whenever it is present.

Chandler Carruth ba1f580f33 Move the SmallVector unit tests to be type-parameterized so that we can
test more than a single instantiation of SmallVector.

Add testing for 0, 1, 2, and 4 element sized "small" buffers. These
appear to be essentially untested in the unit tests until now.

Fix several tests to be robust in the face of a '0' small buffer. As
a consequence of this size buffer, the growth patterns are actually
observable in the test -- yes this means that many tests never caused
a grow to occur before. For some tests I've merely added a reserve call
to normalize behavior. For others, the growth is actually interesting,
and so I captured the fact that growth would occur and adjusted the
assertions to not assume how rapidly growth occured.

Also update the specialization for a '0' small buffer length to have all
the same interface points as the normal small vector.

Chandler Carruth 32d75bec4b Fix a somewhat nasty crasher in PR13378. This crashes inside of
LiveIntervals due to the two-addr pass generating bogus MI code.

The crux of the issue was a loop nesting problem. The intent of the code
which attempts to transform instructions before converting them to
two-addr form is to defer and reprocess any transformed instructions as
the second processing is likely to have more opportunities to coalesce
copies, etc. Unfortunately, there was one section of processing that was
not deferred -- the INSERT_SUBREG rewriting. Due to quirks of how this
rewriting proceeded, not only did it occur early, it removed the bits of
information needed for the deferred processing to correctly generate the
necessary two address form (specifically inserting a copy), but didn't
trigger any immediate assertions and produced what appeared to be
already valid two-address from code. Thus, the assertion only fired much
later in the pipeline.

The fix is to hoist the transformation logic up layer to where it can
more firmly defer all further processing, and to teach the normal
processing to handle an edge case previously handled as part of the
transformation logic. This edge case (already matched tied register
operands) needs to *not* defer any steps.

As has been brought up repeatedly in the process: wow does this code
need refactoring. I *may* squeeze in some time to at least bring sanity
to this loop... but wow... =]

Thanks to Jakob for helpful hints on the way here, and the review.

Chandler Carruth 349f14c72c Revert r160254 temporarily.
It turns out that ASan relied on the at-the-end block insertion order to
(purely by happenstance) disable some LLVM optimizations, which in turn
start firing when the ordering is made more "normal". These
optimizations in turn merge many of the instrumentation reporting calls
which breaks the return address based error reporting in ASan.

We're looking at several different options for fixing this.

Chandler Carruth 7d532c8d07 Reapply r160194, switching to use LV information for finding local kills.
The notable fix is to look at any dependencies attached to the kill
instruction (or other instructions between MI nad the kill) where the
dependencies are specific to the register in question.

The old code implicitly handled this by rejecting the transform if *any*
other uses were found within the block, but after the start point. The
new code directly finds the kill, and has to re-use the existing
dependency scan to check for non-kill uses.

This was caught by self-host, but I found the bug via inspection and use
of absurd assert scaffolding to compute the kills in two ways and
compare them. So I have no useful testcase for this other than
"bootstrap". I'd work harder to reduce a test case if this particular
code were likely to live for a long time.

Thanks to Benjamin Kramer for reviewing the fix itself.

Chandler Carruth d862d697d2 Finish fixing the MachineOperand hashing, providing a nice modern
hash_value overload for MachineOperands. This addresses a FIXME
sufficient for me to remove it, and cleans up the code nicely too.

The important changes to the hashing logic:
- TargetFlags are now included in all of the hashes. These were complete
  missed.
- Register operands have their subregisters and whether they are a def
  included in the hash.
- We now actually hash all of the operand types. Previously, many
operand types were simply *dropped on the floor*. For example:
  - Floating point immediates
  - Large integer immediates (>64-bit)
  - External globals!
  - Register masks
  - Metadata operands
- It removes the offset from the block-address hash; I'm a bit
suspicious of this, but isIdenticalTo doesn't consider the offset for
  black addresses.

Any patterns involving these entities could have triggered extreme
slowdowns in MachineCSE or PHIElimination. Let me know if there are PRs
you think might be closed now... I'm looking myself, but I may miss

Chandler Carruth b8087451ca The hash function for MI expressions, used by MachineCSE, is really
broken. This patch fixes the superficial problems which lead to the
intractably slow compile times reported in PR13225.

The specific issue is that we were failing to include the *offset* of
a global variable in the hash code. Oops. This would in turn cause all
MIs which were only distinguishable due to operating on different
offsets of a global variable to produce identical hash functions. In
some of the test cases attached to the PR I saw hash table activity
where there were O(1000) probes-per-lookup *on average*. A very few
entries were responsible for most of these probes.

There is still quite a bit more to do here. The ad-hoc layering of data
in MachineOperands makes them *extremely* brittle to hash correctly.
We're missing quite a few other cases, the only ones I've fixed here are
the specific MO types which were allowed through the assert() in
getOffset().

Hopefully will fix most of the windows build bot fallout.

Chandler Carruth 4177e6fff5 Convert all tests using TCL-style quoting to use shell-style quoting.
This was done through the aid of a terrible Perl creation. I will not
paste any of the horrors here. Suffice to say, it require multiple
staged rounds of replacements, state carried between, and a few
nested-construct-parsing hacks that I'm not proud of. It happens, by
luck, to be able to deal with all the TCL-quoting patterns in evidence
in the LLVM test suite.

If anyone is maintaining large out-of-tree test trees, feel free to poke
me and I'll send you the steps I used to convert things, as well as
answer any painful questions etc. IRC works best for this type of thing
I find.

Once converted, switch the LLVM lit config to use ShTests the same as
Clang. In addition to being able to delete large amounts of Python code
from 'lit', this will also simplify the entire test suite and some of
lit's architecture.

Finally, the test suite runs 33% faster on Linux now. ;]

Chandler Carruth 563add96ce Make tests which first provide a negative assertion via 'not', then
a pipeline, and then a positive assertion via grep, use two RUN lines
instead.

Supporting these complex ideas of 'success' and 'failure' across
multiple stages of a pipeline is brittle in the shell world, and would
block switching to ShTest format; it only worked due to contrivances
introduced by the TclTest format.

Writing this as two separate RUN lines seems clearer in any event.

This is another step toward completely removing TclTests from lit.

Chandler Carruth 38adf0bdaa Rewrite three tests that had truly egregious abuses of 'grep' in them to
use FileCheck.

Aside from removing a dependence on TCL-style quoting, this also makes
the tests ... significantly more robust. =] It would be really, *really*
great of the maintainer(s) of the CellSPU backend went through and
systematically rewrite these tests to use FileCheck. There are a lot
more that have nearly this bad of abuses.

Another step along the path to a TclTest-free testsuite.

Chandler Carruth 7e621f3242 Switch a bunch of Linker tests from using elaborate echo productions to
just provide and reference separate input files from an Inputs
subdirectory. This pattern works very well in the Clang tree and is
easier to understand in my opinion. It also has fewer limitations and
will remove one particularly annoying use of TCL-style {} quoting from
the testsuite.

Also teach the LLVM lit configuration to avoid recursing into 'Inputs'
subdirectories. This wasn't required for the previous 'Inputs'
subdirectories used due to fortuitous suffix patterns.

This is the first step to completely removing support for TCL-style tests.

a generic construct of the project.

Chandler Carruth 06cb8ed006 Move llvm/Support/IRBuilder.h -> llvm/IRBuilder.h
This was always part of the VMCore library out of necessity -- it deals
entirely in the IR. The .cpp file in fact was already part of the VMCore
library. This is just a mechanical move.

I've tried to go through and re-apply the coding standard's preferred
header sort, but at 40-ish files, I may have gotten some wrong. Please
let me know if so.

I'll be committing the corresponding updates to Clang and Polly, and

This is another vestige of the DejaGNU roots. There were FIXMEs in the
lit setup to add a 'lit.site.cfg', which has been around for quite some
time now, so I've properly switched the handling of the 4 things
actually used in site.exp to go through lit.site.cfg now. No more
parsing of the .exp file, one fewer configure-style generated file,
etc., etc.

Chandler Carruth b05b460330 Clean up the 'check' CMake build rule a bit, notable renaming it to
'check-llvm'.

Don't worry! 'check' still works! =] To rationalize the names of targets
used to run tests, the vague plan is the following:

make check-llvm # run LLVM reg/unit tests (currently 'check')
make check-clang # run Clang reg/unit tests (currently 'clang-test')
make check-rt # run CompilerRT reg/unit tests
make check-asan # run ASan reg/unit tests (subset of -rt)
make check-tsan # run TSan reg/unit tests (subset of -rt)
make check-all # run as much of the above as is available

The last one respects what projects are checked out and built for
a given tree. Personally, I would like to eventually make 'check' be an
alias for 'check-all'. For now however, it is an alias for 'check-llvm',
and thus no behavior has changed.

While this patch and my plan only really apply to CMake, I think it
might be good to similarly rationalize the naming scheme for the Make
builds.

Chandler Carruth 7c888eee47 Completely refactor the structuring of unittest CMake files to match the
Makefiles, the CMake files in every other part of the LLVM tree, and
sanity.

This should also restore the output tree structure of all the unit
tests, sorry for breaking that, and thanks for letting me know.

The fundamental change is to put a CMakeLists.txt file in the unittest
directory, with a single test binary produced from it. This has several
advantages:

- No more weird directory stripping in the unittest macro, allowing it
to be used more readily in other projects.
- No more directory prefixes on all the source files.
- Allows correct and precise use of LLVM's per-directory dependency
  system.
- Allows use of the checking logic for source files that have not been
added to the CMake build. This uncovered a file being skipped with
CMake in LLVM and one in Clang's unit tests.
- Makes Specifying conditional compilation or other custom logic for JIT
  tests easier.

It did require adding the concept of an explicit 'optional' source file
to the CMake build so that the missing-file check can skip cases where
the file is *supposed* to be missing. =]

This is another chunk of refactoring the CMake build in order to make it
usable for other clients like CompilerRT / ASan / TSan.

Note that this is interdependent with a Clang CMake change.
