whether it is used outside of some block.  This can be used to see
if there are any non-local references, for example.

038112a4e0 Change the MemoryBuffer::getFile* methods to take just a pointer to the 
start of a filename, not a filename+length.  All clients can produce a
null terminated name, and the system api's require null terminated 
strings anyway.

495304e351 Make it possible to get an empty struct using 
the new StructType::get method.  The second NULL
is to pacify the gcc warning mechanism.  This

5fe6e33ef8 Don't redundantly clear std::vector members in destructors.

0961ec1afe Change PMTopLevelManager's PassManagers vector element type from 
Pass* to PMDataManager*. PMDataManager is more specific than Pass,
so this more accurately describes the objects that are being stored.

This eliminates the need for several dynamic_casts to PMDataManager*.
It does introduce one dynamic_cast though, in dumpPasses(). Give
this one a comment describing why a dynamic_cast is being used.

58d74910c6 Reimplement the parameter attributes support, phase #1. hilights: 
1. There is now a "PAListPtr" class, which is a smart pointer around
   the underlying uniqued parameter attribute list object, and manages
   its refcount.  It is now impossible to mess up the refcount.
2. PAListPtr is now the main interface to the underlying object, and
   the underlying object is now completely opaque.
3. Implementation details like SmallVector and FoldingSet are now no
   longer part of the interface.
4. You can create a PAListPtr with an arbitrary sequence of
   ParamAttrsWithIndex's, no need to make a SmallVector of a specific 
   size (you can just use an array or scalar or vector if you wish).
5. All the client code that had to check for a null pointer before
   dereferencing the pointer is simplified to just access the 
   PAListPtr directly.
6. The interfaces for adding attrs to a list and removing them is a
   bit simpler.

Phase #2 will rename some stuff (e.g. PAListPtr) and do other less 
invasive changes.

580b89992f Give PassManager and FunctionPassManager a common base class, with 
add(Pass *) as a pure virtual member function. This will allow all
the various addPassesTo* functions in LLVM to avoid hard-coding what

c6694228fa Two things. Preserve the unwind_to when splitting a BB. 
Add the ability to remove just one instance of a BB from a phi node. This fixes

9071dd3a57 check that terminators only occur at the end of a block. This catches the 
common problem of putting two terminators in the same block.  I can't write
a testcase for this because the .ll parser rejects this before the verifier
can, but this can occur when generating IR.

03531a4816 It turns out that in C++ it is legal to declare functions 
that return an opaque type by value, as long as you don't
call it or provide a body (you can take the address of it).
So it is wrong to insist that sret parameters not be an
opaque*.  And I guess it is really up to codegen to complain
if someone tries to call such a function.  I'm also removing
the analogous check from byval parameters, since I don't
see why we shouldn't allow them as long as no-one tries to
call the function or give it a body.

b0c9b93bb4 I noticed that the trampoline straightening transformation could 
drop attributes on varargs call arguments.  Also, it could generate
invalid IR if the transformed call already had the 'nest' attribute
somewhere (this can never happen for code coming from llvm-gcc,
but it's a theoretical possibility).  Fix both problems.

623a389f62 Do not allow attributes beyond a function's last 
parameter, even if it is a varargs function.  Do
allow attributes on the varargs part of a call,
but not beyond the last argument.  Only allow
selected attributes to be on the varargs part of
a call (currently only 'byval' is allowed).  The
reasoning here is that most attributes, eg inreg,
simply make no sense here.

ad9a9e1559 The transform that tries to turn calls to bitcast functions into 
direct calls bails out unless caller and callee have essentially
equivalent parameter attributes.  This is illogical - the callee's
attributes should be of no relevance here.  Rework the logic, which
incidentally fixes a crash when removed arguments have attributes.

a9d0c9dc58 When transforming a call to a bitcast function into 
a direct call with cast parameters and cast return
value (if any), instcombine was prepared to cast any
non-void return value into any other, whether castable
or not.  Add a new predicate for testing whether casting
is valid, and check it both for the return value and
(as a cleanup) for the parameters.

d9d70395d9 Get the verifier to check attributes on calls as well 
as on functions.  Make it verify invokes and not just
ordinary calls.  As a (desired) side-effect, it is no
longer legal to have call attributes on arguments that
are being passed to the varargs part of a varargs
function (llvm-as drops them on the floor anyway).

f0c3354d99 When inlining through an 'nounwind' call, mark inlined 
calls 'nounwind'.  It is important for correct C++
exception handling that nounwind markings do not get
lost, so this transformation is actually needed for
correctness.

43ad6b3e0d Change the PointerType api for creating pointer types. The old functionality of PointerType::get() has become PointerType::getUnqual(), which returns a pointer in the generic address space. The new prototype of PointerType::get() requires both a type and an address space.

ece2c04d53 Make instcombine promote inline asm calls to 'nounwind' 
calls.  Remove special casing of inline asm from the
inliner.  There is a potential problem: the verifier
rejects invokes of inline asm (not sure why).  If an
asm call is not marked "nounwind" in some .ll, and
instcombine is not run, but the inliner is run, then
an illegal module will be created.  This is bad but
I'm not sure what the best approach is.  I'm tempted
to remove the check in the verifier...

7915cbee4d Revert r44626, which turned off the use of readonly 
and readnone for functions with bodies because it
broke llvm-gcc-4.2 bootstrap.  It turns out that,
because of LLVM's array_ref hack, gcc was computing
pure/const attributes wrong (now fixed by turning
off the gcc ipa-pure-const pass).

fe63fb986d Implement address space attribute for LLVM pointer types. Address spaces are 
regions of memory that have a target specific relationship, as described in the 
Embedded C Technical Report. 

This also implements the 2007-12-11-AddressSpaces test, 
which demonstrates how address space attributes can be used in LLVM IR.

In addition, this patch changes the bitcode signature for stores (in a backwards 
compatible manner), such that the pointer type, rather than the pointee type, is 
encoded. This permits type information in the pointer (e.g. address space) to be 
preserved for stores.

LangRef updates are forthcoming.

f286f6fd93 Fix PR1850 by removing an unsafe transformation from VMCore/ConstantFold.cpp. 
Reimplement the xform in Analysis/ConstantFolding.cpp where we can use

80a75bfae9 Adding a collector name attribute to Function in the IR. These 
methods are new to Function:

  bool hasCollector() const;
  const std::string &getCollector() const;
  void setCollector(const std::string &);
  void clearCollector();

The assembly representation is as such:

  define void @f() gc "shadow-stack" { ...

The implementation uses an on-the-side table to map Functions to 
collector names, such that there is no overhead. A StringPool is 
further used to unique collector names, which are extremely
likely to be unique per process.

dc024674ff Fix PR1146: parameter attributes are longer part of 
the function type, instead they belong to functions
and function calls.  This is an updated and slightly
corrected version of Reid Spencer's original patch.
The only known problem is that auto-upgrading of
bitcode files doesn't seem to work properly (see
test/Bitcode/AutoUpgradeIntrinsics.ll).  Hopefully
a bitcode guru (who might that be? :) ) will fix it.

5e41f65699 In order for parameter attribute uniquing to make 
any sense it is important that ParamAttr::None gets
treated the same as not supplying an attribute at
all.  Rather than stripping ParamAttr::None out of
the list of attributes, assert if ParamAttr::None
is seen.  Fix up the bitcode reader which liked to
insert ParamAttr::None all over the place.  Patch
based on one by Török Edwin.

d0561900f3 Don't barf on empty basic blocks. Do not rely on assert 
doing something - this needs to work for release builds
too.  I chose to just abort rather than following the
fancy logic of abortIfBroken, because (1) it is a pain
to do otherwise, and (2) nothing is going to work if the
module is this broken.

af47b11b95 Initial infrastructure for arbitrary precision integer 
codegen support.  This should have no effect on codegen
for other types.  Debatable bits: (1) the use (abuse?)
of a set in SDNode::getValueTypeList; (2) the length of
getTypeToTransformTo, which maybe should be refactored
with a non-inline part for extended value types.

ccf596a53e convertFromInteger, as originally written, expected sign-extended 
input.  APInt unfortunately zero-extends signed integers, so Dale
modified the function to expect zero-extended input.  Make this
assumption explicit in the function name.

d20c824b20 Factor the dominator tree calculation details out into DominatorCalculation.h. This 
change is not useful in and of itself, but it lays the groundwork for combining
the dominator and postdominator implementations.

Also, factor a few methods that are common to DominatorTree and PostDominatorTree
into DominatorTreeBase.  Again, this will make merging the two calculation methods
simpler in the future.

8b94a14a78 C bindings for libLLVMCore.a and libLLVMBitWriter.a. 
- The naming prefix is LLVM.
- All types are represented using opaque references.
- Functions are not named LLVM{Type}{Method}; the names became
  unreadable goop. Instead, they are named LLVM{ImperativeSentence}.
- Where an attribute only appears once in the class hierarchy (e.g.,
  linkage only applies to values; parameter types only apply to
  function types), the class is omitted from identifiers for
  brevity. Tastes like methods.
- Strings are C strings or string/length tuples on a case-by-case
  basis.
- APIs which give the caller ownership of an object are not mapped
  (removeFromParent, certain constructor overloads). This keeps
  keep memory management as simple as possible.

For each library with bindings:

  llvm-c/<LIB>.h       - Declares the bindings.
  lib/<LIB>/<LIB>.cpp  - Implements the bindings.

So just link with the library of your choice and use the C header
instead of the C++ one.

8c33da5dc4 Fix for PR1633: Verifier doesn't fully verify GC intrinsics 
LLVM now enforces the following prototypes for the write barriers:

<ty>* @llvm.gcread(<ty2>*, <ty>**)
void @llvm.gcwrite(<ty>*, <ty2>*, <ty>**)

And for @llvm.gcroot, the first stack slot is verified to be an alloca or a 
bitcast of an alloca.

Fixes test/CodeGen/Generic/GC/lower_gcroot.ll, which violated these.

d50dc73b89 Two ParamAttrsVectors which differ by a permutation 
of their elements do not yield the same ParamAttrsList,
though they should.  On the other hand, everyone seems
to pass such vectors with elements ordered by increasing
index, so rather than sorting the elements simply assert
that the elements are ordered in this way.

43421b3dd7 Next round of APFloat changes. 
Use APFloat in UpgradeParser and AsmParser.
Change all references to ConstantFP to use the
APFloat interface rather than double.  Remove
the ConstantFP double interfaces.
Use APFloat functions for constant folding arithmetic
and comparisons.
(There are still way too many places APFloat is
just a wrapper around host float/double, but we're
getting there.)

cd406fe123 sink clone() down the class hierarchy from CmpInst into ICmpInst/FCmpInst. 
This eliminates a conditional on that path, and ensures ICmpInst/FCmpInst
both have an out-of-line virtual method to home the class.

7abff31957 When Intrinsic::getName is constructing names for overloaded intrinsics, 
use the ValueType name instead of the llvm type name, to match what the
verifier expects. For integers these are the same, but for floating-point
values the intrinsics use f32/f64 instead of float/double.

0162c1815e Compute the argument list as lazily as possible. This ensures that clients 
that don't use it don't have to pay the memory cost for the arguments.  This
allows us to avoid creating Argument nodes for many prototypes and for clients
who lazily deserialize code from a bytecode file.

This occurs in the example in PR1602.  With this fixed, we now compile

ebbc95da49 Patch 10 for long double. Doing constants right needs expanding ConstantFP 
to handle values bigger than double.  If we assume host==target and host
long double works correctly, this is not too bad, but we don't want to
have that limitation longterm.  I could implement accepting double
constants as long double or something like that, which would lead to
incorrect codegen with no errors; the more I think about that the worse
it seems.  Rather than do such a hack that would be backed out later,
I'm settling for giving reasonable error messages, for now.

de0e42d3c0 Speed up updateDFSNumbers with two observations: 
1. domtree is a tree, not a graph.  There is no need to avoid revisiting nodes with a set.
2. the worklist can contain the child iterator pointers so we don't get N^2 rescanning of children.

This speeds up updateDFSNumbers significantly, making it basically free.  On the testcase in PR1432,
this speeds up loopsimplify by another 3x, dropping it from the 12th most expensive pass to the to
the 30th. :)  It used to be #1.

3e089ae0b8 reimplement dfs number computation to be significantly faster. This speeds up 
natural loop canonicalization (which does many cfg xforms) by 4.3x, for 
example.  This also fixes a bug in postdom dfnumber computation.

w.r.t. #3, my patches last night happened to expose the bug, but this 
has been broken since Owen's r35839 patch to LoopSimplify.  The code
was subsequently moved over from LoopSimplify into Dominators, carrying
the latent bug.  Fun stuff.

0a5f83c22c switch the DomTreeNodes and IDoms maps in idom/postidom to a 
DenseMap instead of an std::map.  This speeds up postdomtree
by about 25% and domtree by about 23%.  It also speeds up clients,
for example, domfrontier by 11%, mem2reg by 4% and ADCE by 6%.

6994040a95 This is the patch to provide clean intrinsic function overloading support in LLVM. It cleans up the intrinsic definitions and generally smooths the process for more complicated intrinsic writing. It will be used by the upcoming atomic intrinsics as well as vector and float intrinsics in the future. 
This also changes the syntax for llvm.bswap, llvm.part.set, llvm.part.select, and llvm.ct* intrinsics. They are automatically upgraded by both the LLVM ASM reader and the bitcode reader. The test cases have been updated, with special tests added to ensure the automatic upgrading is supported.

fdef00f1f7 As the number of parameter attributes increases, 
Verifier::visitFunction is suffering a combinatorial
explosion due to the number of mutually incompatible
attributes.  This patch tidies the whole thing up
using attribute masks.  While there I fixed some
small bugs: (1) the ByVal attribute tests cast a
type to a pointer type, which can fail.  Yes, the
fact it is of a pointer type is checked before,
but a failing check does not cause the program
to exit, it continues on outputting further errors;
(2) Nothing was checking that an sret attribute is
on the first parameter; (3) nothing was checking that
a function for which isStructReturn() is true has a
parameter with the sret attribute and vice-versa (I
don't think it is possible for this to go wrong, but
it seems right to check it).

552d6405bf Add better verification of attributes on function types. It is not permitted 
to use sret or inreg on the function. It is equally illegal to use noreturn
or nounwind on a parameter; they only go with the function. This patch
enforces these rules.

7f32156bb9 Generalize MVT::ValueType and associated functions to be able to represent 
extended vector types. Remove the special SDNode opcodes used for pre-legalize
vector operations, and the special MVT::Vector type used with them. Adjust
lowering and legalize to work with the normal SDNode kinds instead, and to
use the normal MVT functions to work with vector types instead of using the
two special operands that the pre-legalize nodes held.

This allows pre-legalize and post-legalize DAGs, and the code that operates
on them, to be more consistent. Pre-legalize vector operators can be handled
more consistently with scalar operators. And, -view-dag-combine1-dags and
-view-legalize-dags now look prettier for vector code.

that decodes the escape sequences, thus breaking all cases that use them.

922d0bcf8b Adjust how LLVM names are produced: 
1. Always use % for local and @ for global.
2. Replace NameNeedsQuotes with QuoteNameIfNeeded so that any adjustments
   to the name can be done in one pass.
3. Implement generation of hex escapes so we don't get "wonky" characters
   in the output.

d1458f1d30 Fix a bug that prevented the JIT from working correctly after llvm_shutdown. 
Pass info objects are initialized by static ctors, so deleting them at
llvm_shutdown time prevents resurrection from working.

18feb92e91 merge several fields in GlobalValue to use the same word, move CallingConv 
field into SubclassData in Value.  This shrinks GlobalVAlue from 48->40
bytes, Function from 88->76, and GlobalVariable from 76->68.  This trims
4640 bytes off my testcase, reading a bc file without materializing any
functions.

f8dfef7437 The (negative) offset from a SymbolTableListTraits-using ilist to its container 
object is always constant.  As such, evaluate it at compile time instead of storing
it as an ivar in SymbolTableListTraits.  This shrinks every SymbolTableListTraits
ilist by a word, shrinking BasicBlock from 44->40 bytes, Function from 96->88 bytes,
and Module from 60->52 bytes.

17fcdd5e1b Refactor SymbolTableListTraits to only have a single pointer in it, instead 
of two.  This shrinkifies Function by 8 bytes (104->96) and Module by 8
bytes (68->60).  On a testcase of mine, this reduces the memory used to
read a module header from 565680b to 561024, a little over 4K.

Don't assert everytime an intrinsic name isn't recognized. Instead, make

Implement "actual" argument types for the Intrinsic member functions. This
involves changing the getName, getType, and getDeclaration methods to have
optional parameters for the actual types. These are necessary in order for
the type/name to be constructed properly for overloaded intrinsics. Only

559d77afb3 For PR1297: 
1. Clear up confusion between "GotBits" and "ExpectBits". GotBits is the
   type actually provided. ExpectedBits is the type expected for the
   intrinsics. Before this patch, it was reversed!
2. Implement checks for overloaded intrinsics. This involves computing the
   suffix expected and making sure the suffix matches the function name. It
   also includes some intrinsic-specific checks such as ensuring that the
   bswap parameter and result are the same width and an even number of bytes.

590b3c559f For PR1258: 
Radically simplify the SlotMachine. There is no need to keep Value planes
around any more. This change causes slot numbering to number all un-named,
non-void values starting at 0 and incrementing monotonically through the
function, regardless of type (including BasicBlocks). Getting slot numbers
is now a single lookup operation instead of a double lookup.

22a1cf9d3a Add preparePassManager() hook. This allows each pass to check whether 
current active pass manager is appropriate or not.

A loop pass may consider current LPPassManager in appropraite if loop
pass is not preserving analysis information that is used by other
passes managed by current LPPassManager. In such situation, loop pass
can pop current LPPassManager from the PMStack using this  hook
and use new LPPassManager for itself.

0d54b7df4f Use the APInt versions of the bit-wise conversions of float/double to int 
and back. While this is not strictly necessary, it does pave the way for

f57fc81fae Implement a convenience method to construct a ConstantInt directly from an 
APInt. The implied type is the integer type that corresponds to the bit
width of the APInt.

a5c7472726 For PR1205: 
Implement review feedback:
1. Use new APInt::RoundDoubleToAPInt interface to specify the bit width so
   that we don't have to truncate or extend in constant folding.
2. Fix a pasteo in SDiv that prevented a check for overflow.
3. Fix the shift operators: undef happens when the shift amount is equal
   to the bitwidth.

532d0ce208 For PR1205: 
Implement the first step towards arbitrary precision integer support in
LLVM. The APInt class provides arbitrary precision arithmetic and value
representation. This patch changes ConstantInt to use APInt as its value
representation without supporting bit widths > 64 yet. That change will
come after ConstantFolding handles bit widths > 64 bits.

1cf5574636 Rework GlobalValue::removeDeadConstantUsers to always remove dead constant 
exprs hanging off a global, even if the global is not otherwise dead.  This
requires some tricky iterator gymnastics.

This implements Transforms/GlobalOpt/constantexpr-dangle.ll by deleting a
constantexpr that made it appear that the address of the function was taken.

6b6f6ba66c cleanup ConstantInt to use a single DenseMap for uniquing instead of the 
heavy-weight ValueMap class.  This reduces mem usage bc reading kc++ by 29K,
even though it only creates 2955 constant ints!
