fc74abfba5 Enable first-class aggregates support. 
Remove the GetResultInst instruction. It is still accepted in LLVM assembly
and bitcode, where it is now auto-upgraded to ExtractValueInst. Also, remove
support for return instructions with multiple values. These are auto-upgraded
to use InsertValueInst instructions.

The IRBuilder still accepts multiple-value returns, and auto-upgrades them
to InsertValueInst instructions.

e089160d10 InsertValue and ExtractValue constant expressions are always 
folded. Remove code that handled the case where they aren't
folded, and remove bitcode reader/writer support for them.

071aade5f0 Document and fix Constant::getVectorElements to return an empty vector 
when presented with a constant expr.

If ConstantExpr::getV[IF]Cmp to work when ConstantFoldCompareInstruction
returns an undef or constant expr.

155a490258 Fix three bugs: 
1) evaluate [v]fcmp true/false with undefs to true or false instead
   of undef.
2) fix vector comparisons with undef to return a vector result instead

bb0e248718 Add a new version of Module::getFunction that takes a const char* instead 
of a std::string.  This avoids copying the string to the heap in common
cases.  Patch by Pratik Solanki!

45e3958941 In ConstantArray::getAsString(), we know the size of the resultant string in advance so we can pre-allocate it and just fill in 
the entries.  This improves the time for the AsmPrinter on InstructionCombining.cpp from 0.4248s to 0.3370s.

502a4f5162 Do not speculatively execute an instruction by hoisting it to its predecessor BB if any of its operands are defined but not used in BB. The transformation will prevent the operand from being sunk into the use block.

7dc1def162 Re-apply 52002, allowing the verifier to accept non-MRV struct return 
types on functions, with adjustments so that it accepts both

83ec4b6711 Wrap MVT::ValueType in a struct to get type safety 
and better control the abstraction.  Rename the type
to MVT.  To update out-of-tree patches, the main
thing to do is to rename MVT::ValueType to MVT, and
rewrite expressions like MVT::getSizeInBits(VT) in
the form VT.getSizeInBits().  Use VT.getSimpleVT()
to extract a MVT::SimpleValueType for use in switch
statements (you will get an assert failure if VT is
an extended value type - these shouldn't exist after
type legalization).
This results in a small speedup of codegen and no
new testsuite failures (x86-64 linux).

7e2dd6628e Factor several methods, including getInversePredicate and 
getSwappedPredicate, from ICmpInst and FCmpInst into common

81a0c0b44e IR, bitcode reader, bitcode writer, and asmparser changes to 
insertvalue and extractvalue to use constant indices instead of
Value* indices. And begin updating LangRef.html.

There's definately more to come here, but I'm checking this 
basic support in now to make it available to people who are
interested.

28c3cff825 Factor code to copy global value attributes like 
the section or the visibility from one global
value to another: copyAttributesFrom.  This is
particularly useful for duplicating functions:
previously this was done by explicitly copying
each attribute in turn at each place where a
new function was created out of an old one, with
the result that obscure attributes were regularly
forgotten (like the collector or the section).
Hopefully now everything is uniform and nothing
is forgotten.

ff155f03bd Move the operator new and operator delete out of line. This fixes an issue with 
operator new() referring to the static initTags function, which has to be in the

aafce77b17 Add CommonLinkage; currently tentative definitions 
are represented as "weak", but there are subtle differences
in some cases on Darwin, so we need both.  The intent
is that "common" will behave identically to "weak" unless
somebody changes their target to do something else.
No functional change as yet.

94fb68ba21 Merge of r51073-51074 from use-diet branch. 
Do not rely on std::swap<Use>, provide a (faster) member function instead.
This change is primarily necessitated by MSVC++'s incompatibility with
declaring std::swap<Use> to be a friend of Use.

Also contains some minor tweaks to Use inline functions,
to undo pointless changes that sneaked in with the last merge.

6ddba2b933 Change class' public PassInfo variables to by initialized with the 
address of the PassInfo directly instead of calling getPassInfo.
This eliminates a bunch of dynamic initializations of static data.

Also, fold RegisterPassBase into PassInfo, make a bunch of its
data members const, and rearrange some code to initialize data
members in constructors instead of using setter member functions.

038112a4e0 Change the MemoryBuffer::getFile* methods to take just a pointer to the 
start of a filename, not a filename+length.  All clients can produce a
null terminated name, and the system api's require null terminated

0961ec1afe Change PMTopLevelManager's PassManagers vector element type from 
Pass* to PMDataManager*. PMDataManager is more specific than Pass,
so this more accurately describes the objects that are being stored.

This eliminates the need for several dynamic_casts to PMDataManager*.
It does introduce one dynamic_cast though, in dumpPasses(). Give
this one a comment describing why a dynamic_cast is being used.

58d74910c6 Reimplement the parameter attributes support, phase #1. hilights: 
1. There is now a "PAListPtr" class, which is a smart pointer around
   the underlying uniqued parameter attribute list object, and manages
   its refcount.  It is now impossible to mess up the refcount.
2. PAListPtr is now the main interface to the underlying object, and
   the underlying object is now completely opaque.
3. Implementation details like SmallVector and FoldingSet are now no
   longer part of the interface.
4. You can create a PAListPtr with an arbitrary sequence of
   ParamAttrsWithIndex's, no need to make a SmallVector of a specific 
   size (you can just use an array or scalar or vector if you wish).
5. All the client code that had to check for a null pointer before
   dereferencing the pointer is simplified to just access the 
   PAListPtr directly.
6. The interfaces for adding attrs to a list and removing them is a
   bit simpler.

Phase #2 will rename some stuff (e.g. PAListPtr) and do other less 
invasive changes.

580b89992f Give PassManager and FunctionPassManager a common base class, with

c6694228fa Two things. Preserve the unwind_to when splitting a BB.

9071dd3a57 check that terminators only occur at the end of a block. This catches the 
common problem of putting two terminators in the same block.  I can't write
a testcase for this because the .ll parser rejects this before the verifier
can, but this can occur when generating IR.

03531a4816 It turns out that in C++ it is legal to declare functions 
that return an opaque type by value, as long as you don't
call it or provide a body (you can take the address of it).
So it is wrong to insist that sret parameters not be an
opaque*.  And I guess it is really up to codegen to complain
if someone tries to call such a function.  I'm also removing
the analogous check from byval parameters, since I don't
see why we shouldn't allow them as long as no-one tries to
call the function or give it a body.

b0c9b93bb4 I noticed that the trampoline straightening transformation could 
drop attributes on varargs call arguments.  Also, it could generate
invalid IR if the transformed call already had the 'nest' attribute
somewhere (this can never happen for code coming from llvm-gcc,
but it's a theoretical possibility).  Fix both problems.

623a389f62 Do not allow attributes beyond a function's last 
parameter, even if it is a varargs function.  Do
allow attributes on the varargs part of a call,
but not beyond the last argument.  Only allow
selected attributes to be on the varargs part of
a call (currently only 'byval' is allowed).  The
reasoning here is that most attributes, eg inreg,
simply make no sense here.

ad9a9e1559 The transform that tries to turn calls to bitcast functions into 
direct calls bails out unless caller and callee have essentially
equivalent parameter attributes.  This is illogical - the callee's
attributes should be of no relevance here.  Rework the logic, which
incidentally fixes a crash when removed arguments have attributes.

a9d0c9dc58 When transforming a call to a bitcast function into 
a direct call with cast parameters and cast return
value (if any), instcombine was prepared to cast any
non-void return value into any other, whether castable
or not.  Add a new predicate for testing whether casting
is valid, and check it both for the return value and
(as a cleanup) for the parameters.

d9d70395d9 Get the verifier to check attributes on calls as well 
as on functions.  Make it verify invokes and not just
ordinary calls.  As a (desired) side-effect, it is no
longer legal to have call attributes on arguments that
are being passed to the varargs part of a varargs
function (llvm-as drops them on the floor anyway).

f0c3354d99 When inlining through an 'nounwind' call, mark inlined 
calls 'nounwind'.  It is important for correct C++
exception handling that nounwind markings do not get

43ad6b3e0d Change the PointerType api for creating pointer types. The old functionality of PointerType::get() has become PointerType::getUnqual(), which returns a pointer in the generic address space. The new prototype of PointerType::get() requires both a type and an address space.

ece2c04d53 Make instcombine promote inline asm calls to 'nounwind' 
calls.  Remove special casing of inline asm from the
inliner.  There is a potential problem: the verifier
rejects invokes of inline asm (not sure why).  If an
asm call is not marked "nounwind" in some .ll, and
instcombine is not run, but the inliner is run, then
an illegal module will be created.  This is bad but
I'm not sure what the best approach is.  I'm tempted
to remove the check in the verifier...

7915cbee4d Revert r44626, which turned off the use of readonly 
and readnone for functions with bodies because it
broke llvm-gcc-4.2 bootstrap.  It turns out that,
because of LLVM's array_ref hack, gcc was computing
pure/const attributes wrong (now fixed by turning
off the gcc ipa-pure-const pass).

fe63fb986d Implement address space attribute for LLVM pointer types. Address spaces are 
regions of memory that have a target specific relationship, as described in the 
Embedded C Technical Report. 

This also implements the 2007-12-11-AddressSpaces test, 
which demonstrates how address space attributes can be used in LLVM IR.

In addition, this patch changes the bitcode signature for stores (in a backwards 
compatible manner), such that the pointer type, rather than the pointee type, is 
encoded. This permits type information in the pointer (e.g. address space) to be 
preserved for stores.

LangRef updates are forthcoming.

f286f6fd93 Fix PR1850 by removing an unsafe transformation from VMCore/ConstantFold.cpp. 
Reimplement the xform in Analysis/ConstantFolding.cpp where we can use
targetdata to validate that it is safe.  While I'm in there, fix some const
correctness issues and generalize the interface to the "operand folder".

80a75bfae9 Adding a collector name attribute to Function in the IR. These 
methods are new to Function:

  bool hasCollector() const;
  const std::string &getCollector() const;
  void setCollector(const std::string &);
  void clearCollector();

The assembly representation is as such:

  define void @f() gc "shadow-stack" { ...

The implementation uses an on-the-side table to map Functions to 
collector names, such that there is no overhead. A StringPool is 
further used to unique collector names, which are extremely
likely to be unique per process.

a3355ffb3d Rather than having special rules like "intrinsics cannot 
throw exceptions", just mark intrinsics with the nounwind
attribute.  Likewise, mark intrinsics as readnone/readonly
and get rid of special aliasing logic (which didn't use
anything more than this anyway).

dc024674ff Fix PR1146: parameter attributes are longer part of 
the function type, instead they belong to functions
and function calls.  This is an updated and slightly
corrected version of Reid Spencer's original patch.
The only known problem is that auto-upgrading of
bitcode files doesn't seem to work properly (see
test/Bitcode/AutoUpgradeIntrinsics.ll).  Hopefully
a bitcode guru (who might that be? :) ) will fix it.

827cde1c83 Fix PR1816. If a bitcast of a function only exists because of a 
trivial difference in function attributes, allow calls to it to
be converted to direct calls.  Based on a patch by Török Edwin.
While there, move the various lists of mutually incompatible
parameters etc out of the verifier and into ParameterAttributes.h.

5e41f65699 In order for parameter attribute uniquing to make 
any sense it is important that ParamAttr::None gets
treated the same as not supplying an attribute at
all.  Rather than stripping ParamAttr::None out of
the list of attributes, assert if ParamAttr::None
is seen.  Fix up the bitcode reader which liked to
insert ParamAttr::None all over the place.  Patch
based on one by Török Edwin.

d0561900f3 Don't barf on empty basic blocks. Do not rely on assert 
doing something - this needs to work for release builds
too.  I chose to just abort rather than following the
fancy logic of abortIfBroken, because (1) it is a pain
to do otherwise, and (2) nothing is going to work if the
module is this broken.

af47b11b95 Initial infrastructure for arbitrary precision integer 
codegen support.  This should have no effect on codegen
for other types.  Debatable bits: (1) the use (abuse?)
of a set in SDNode::getValueTypeList; (2) the length of

with a non-inline part for extended value types.

ccf596a53e convertFromInteger, as originally written, expected sign-extended 
input.  APInt unfortunately zero-extends signed integers, so Dale
modified the function to expect zero-extended input.  Make this
assumption explicit in the function name.

d20c824b20 Factor the dominator tree calculation details out into DominatorCalculation.h. This 
change is not useful in and of itself, but it lays the groundwork for combining
the dominator and postdominator implementations.

Also, factor a few methods that are common to DominatorTree and PostDominatorTree
into DominatorTreeBase.  Again, this will make merging the two calculation methods
simpler in the future.

8b94a14a78 C bindings for libLLVMCore.a and libLLVMBitWriter.a. 
- The naming prefix is LLVM.
- All types are represented using opaque references.
- Functions are not named LLVM{Type}{Method}; the names became
  unreadable goop. Instead, they are named LLVM{ImperativeSentence}.
- Where an attribute only appears once in the class hierarchy (e.g.,
  linkage only applies to values; parameter types only apply to
  function types), the class is omitted from identifiers for
  brevity. Tastes like methods.
- Strings are C strings or string/length tuples on a case-by-case
  basis.
- APIs which give the caller ownership of an object are not mapped
  (removeFromParent, certain constructor overloads). This keeps
  keep memory management as simple as possible.

For each library with bindings:

  llvm-c/<LIB>.h       - Declares the bindings.
  lib/<LIB>/<LIB>.cpp  - Implements the bindings.

So just link with the library of your choice and use the C header
instead of the C++ one.

8c33da5dc4 Fix for PR1633: Verifier doesn't fully verify GC intrinsics 
LLVM now enforces the following prototypes for the write barriers:

<ty>* @llvm.gcread(<ty2>*, <ty>**)
void @llvm.gcwrite(<ty>*, <ty2>*, <ty>**)

And for @llvm.gcroot, the first stack slot is verified to be an alloca or a 
bitcast of an alloca.

Fixes test/CodeGen/Generic/GC/lower_gcroot.ll, which violated these.

d50dc73b89 Two ParamAttrsVectors which differ by a permutation 
of their elements do not yield the same ParamAttrsList,
though they should.  On the other hand, everyone seems
to pass such vectors with elements ordered by increasing
index, so rather than sorting the elements simply assert
that the elements are ordered in this way.

7abff31957 When Intrinsic::getName is constructing names for overloaded intrinsics, 
use the ValueType name instead of the llvm type name, to match what the
verifier expects. For integers these are the same, but for floating-point
values the intrinsics use f32/f64 instead of float/double.

0162c1815e Compute the argument list as lazily as possible. This ensures that clients 
that don't use it don't have to pay the memory cost for the arguments.  This
allows us to avoid creating Argument nodes for many prototypes and for clients
who lazily deserialize code from a bytecode file.

ebbc95da49 Patch 10 for long double. Doing constants right needs expanding ConstantFP 
to handle values bigger than double.  If we assume host==target and host
long double works correctly, this is not too bad, but we don't want to
have that limitation longterm.  I could implement accepting double
constants as long double or something like that, which would lead to
incorrect codegen with no errors; the more I think about that the worse
it seems.  Rather than do such a hack that would be backed out later,
I'm settling for giving reasonable error messages, for now.

de0e42d3c0 Speed up updateDFSNumbers with two observations: 
1. domtree is a tree, not a graph.  There is no need to avoid revisiting nodes with a set.
2. the worklist can contain the child iterator pointers so we don't get N^2 rescanning of children.

This speeds up updateDFSNumbers significantly, making it basically free.  On the testcase in PR1432,
this speeds up loopsimplify by another 3x, dropping it from the 12th most expensive pass to the to
the 30th. :)  It used to be #1.

3e089ae0b8 reimplement dfs number computation to be significantly faster. This speeds up 
natural loop canonicalization (which does many cfg xforms) by 4.3x, for 
example.  This also fixes a bug in postdom dfnumber computation.

has been broken since Owen's r35839 patch to LoopSimplify.  The code
was subsequently moved over from LoopSimplify into Dominators, carrying
the latent bug.  Fun stuff.

0a5f83c22c switch the DomTreeNodes and IDoms maps in idom/postidom to a 
DenseMap instead of an std::map.  This speeds up postdomtree

6994040a95 This is the patch to provide clean intrinsic function overloading support in LLVM. It cleans up the intrinsic definitions and generally smooths the process for more complicated intrinsic writing. It will be used by the upcoming atomic intrinsics as well as vector and float intrinsics in the future. 
This also changes the syntax for llvm.bswap, llvm.part.set, llvm.part.select, and llvm.ct* intrinsics. They are automatically upgraded by both the LLVM ASM reader and the bitcode reader. The test cases have been updated, with special tests added to ensure the automatic upgrading is supported.

Fix dominance frontier update during loop unswitch. This fixes PR 1589, again

e87f23377c After a discussion with Anton, it turns out that the InReg attribute is not 
permitted on function results. So, revert the last patch to make it illegal.

6e800fe6cb The InReg parameter attribute is valid on function results. The llvm-gcc-4.0 
front end converts regparm attribute on the gcc function into InReg attribute 
on the llvm function. This fixes test/CFrontend/2002-07-30-SubrefSetAssertion.c
